Five tips to style your home for Christmas
Get your home into the festive spirit with these decorating ideas from Michelle Ludwig of Our Mountain Life.
1. First Impressions
“Make your entry way stand out,” says Michelle, who recommends keeping things classic (try this faux pine wreath from Farmgate & Twine) or opting for native florals. “Add some fairy lights to your wreath for that extra sparkle.
2. Keep it Simple
Choose your theme and stick to it. “Keep to a theme, and stick to it. I love a traditional Christmas,” adds Michelle. “Don’t over style.”
3. Assume the Mantle
Despite the fact we enjoy a Summer festive season here in the Southern hemisphere, the mantle piece is still the heart of Christmas styling. “Decorate your mantel with some greenery, stockings or Santa sacks, advises Michelle. No mantle in your home?” If you don’t have a mantel you could decorate a buffet, sideboard or your entertainment unit instead.”
4. Kids Corner
Keep the kids clear of your perfectly-styled Christmas décor by giving them their own space. “Have a designated area set up for the children – Christmas books, games, nativity, and an advent calendar,” says Michelle. Enlist their help to set it up to give them a sense of ownership and responsibility, too – that way they’re (ever so slightly) less likely to destroy.
There’s no need to wait until Christmas lunch to style the dining table, instead keep it festive in the lead up. “Go for a glitzy centrepiece with some gorgeous green foliage to compliment,” suggests Michelle. Try this vase from Tiny Nest. Simply top up with some fresh greenery and crackers on the big day, and that’s a job already ticked off Christmas morning to-do list.
